Is Fasting a Necessary Preparation for Abdominal Ultrasound?
ثبت نشده
چکیده
INTRODUCTION Optimum conditions for the ultrasonic examination of the abdominal organs require a fluid-filled gall bladder and as little gas in the gastrointestinal tract as possible [1]. In addition the thin patient is easier to examine than the fat patient since higher-frequency transducers can be used which improve resolution. Most ultrasound (US) departments instruct their patients to come fasting for such examinations, sometimes for as long as 12 hours, assuming that the gall bladder would otherwise be contracted and difficult to assess and that fasting patients will have less gas in the duodenum & colon. Vogel et al [1] have reported favourable results with a two-day low calorie diet, laxatives and fasting. Other groups have found gas reducing agents to be of no value [2]. Some investigations have found a barium meal or upper gastrointestinal series does not interfere with abdominal US although the US images, especially of the liver and gall bladder [3,4] were poor after barium enema.

Is fasting a necessary preparation for abdominal ultrasound?
OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of fasting on the technical success of abdominal ultrasound examination. METHODS: In a randomized, prospective study, 150 patients for abdominal ultrasound were divided into two groups of 75 patients each with instructions to fast for six hours or have normal breakfast respectively. RESULT: The technical success of the abdominal ultrasound performed by radiologist...
متن کاملThe effect of fasting on Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging
As a nuclear approach, Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a functional imaging technique which is based on the detection of gamma ray pairs emitted by a positron-emitting radionuclide. There are certain limitations to this technique such as normal tissue uptake. Therefore, it has been recommended that patients prepare before scanning. Fasting for a short while before PET imaging is an exampl...

Background: Acute abdominal pain is a common complaint in an emergency setting. An immediate and precise diagnosis is necessary for reducing morbidity and mortality. Several studies have reported that CT scan increases diagnostic accuracy for patients with acute abdominal pain. This study was designed to evaluate the sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of spiral CT scan compared to that of ab...
متن کاملThe Utility of Ultrasound and Laboratory Data for Predicting Intra-abdominal Injury among Children with Blunt Abdominal Trauma
Background: Children with blunt abdominal trauma (BAT) can be risk stratified for intra-abdominal injury (IAI) through a combination of readily accessible clinical variables. The aim of this study was to identify ultrasound and laboratory studies that accurately identify IAI while limiting unnecessary CT-scan among children without injury. Materials and Methods We conducted a prospective, obse...
متن کاملRole of duplex Doppler ultrasound in the assessment of patients with postprandial abdominal pain.
In 10 patients with postprandial abdominal pain thought likely to be the result of mesenteric ischaemia Doppler ultrasound examinations of the superior mesenteric and coeliac arteries were performed both after fasting and a standard meal of 800 kcal. Compared with control values Doppler waveform analysis suggested seven abnormal vessels. Two patients had abnormal fasting superior mesenteric art...
